Historically, women have struggled for centuries to be recognized as equal female university students. Like so many other things – land ownership, voting and more – the road to full educational attainment for women was long and difficult, but today, education is within reach for more women than ever before.
Gender bias harms academic career path
As female scholars work to advance knowledge in academia, they often face biases that make it hard for them to gain the respect of their peers. A recent study, for example, found that nursing and sociology, research topics that have traditionally been associated with women, are not valued as highly in the academic world as subjects that have traditionally been dominated by men.
Some women, however, do not let this bias stop them from pursuing their interests in academia. Harberson, who teaches at a private college in Boston, said she has encouraged her students to seek out a degree program that will help them gain the academic skills needed to be successful, regardless of their gender.
One way to do that is to find a women’s college that offers programs that cater to their needs. Some universities have a wide range of women’s studies programs, others offer specialized degrees that focus on specific women’s issues and/or the lives of women in particular fields or communities.
Admission to a women’s college is typically very selective. The admissions office will review the SAT and ACT scores of applicants to see if they are a good match for the school.
It is important to choose a women’s college that has an established reputation for offering strong academic programs in the subject area you want to pursue. For example, if you’re interested in a degree in science, consider attending a college that has a strong STEM curriculum.
You’ll also want to be aware of whether the college offers opportunities for professional development. For instance, the college may have a women’s center where you can get mentorship and guidance to help you advance your career.
Most colleges with a women’s center or a dedicated women’s studies department also have an active alumni association that helps to support graduates in their professional careers. Some even have a scholarship program to assist deserving women in the area of their choice.
In addition to the academic programs offered by a women’s college, you will also find an active and vibrant student community with activities and events that are specifically for women. In this environment, you can find a community of friends who share your passion for studying and are supportive of your goals.
For example, Mount Saint Mary’s University has an extensive student organization for women that focuses on exploring science and the arts. The college also hosts the annual National Women’s History Month celebration and awards scholarships to deserving students.
Some women’s colleges also have relationships with nearby co-ed schools that allow their female students to take classes at these colleges and vice versa. This can be a great option for students who need more time to complete their degrees and would prefer to study at a co-ed school in the area before transferring to a women’s college.
